A Boost for Neighbourhood Parks

30 August 2010

Yarra Ranges Council has embarked on a program to improve its urban neighbourhood parks.

Upgrades have just been completed on five parks as part of a ten-year Neighbourhood Park Upgrade program, including Castle Hill Reserve (Mooroolbark), Lancaster Reserve (Chirnside Park), Parkway Reserve (Chirnside Park), Rolling Hills Reserve (Mooroolbark) and Balmoral Reserve (Kilsyth).

A range of works at the individual parks was completed, including shade and screen planting, path construction and maintenance, park seating and improved access points, at a cost of around $165,000.

Yarra Ranges councillor Richard Higgins said the Neighbourhood Park Upgrade program was recently introduced to council’s Capital Works Budget to improve the functionality and appearance of small urban parks and reserves.

“Neighbourhood parks are an important part of our residential landscape, providing a space for families to exercise, enjoy the outdoors and socialise within walking distance of their homes,” Cr Higgins said.

“With more than 80 neighbourhood parks throughout Yarra Ranges, this upgrade program will provide essential funding to implement a number of measures to make our parks more inviting and user friendly while making them easier to maintain over the long term.”

Cr Higgins said works at the Castle Hill Reserve had also seen the creation of four timber native animal sculptures.

“A row of cypress trees needed to be removed due to storm damage,” Cr Higgins said.

“Instead of removing the stumps completely, native animal sculptures were carved out of the wood and will remain as an attractive and interesting feature of this particular park,” he said.

Cr Higgins said he had already received many favourable comments about the park upgrades.

“The transformation of these parks has been amazing, and it will be great to see more parks benefit from this program over the next ten years,” Cr Higgins said.

Four parks are due to be upgraded as part of the program’s next round of funding, including Hedwig Drive (Mooroolbark), Stuart Road (Lilydale), Batterbee Reserve (Mooroolbark) and Anderson Street (Lilydale).
